On Prayer · §33

33.

It seems to me, further, having discussed the places of prayer, not to end the word here. Four places, I take it, must be outlined, which I found scattered in the Scriptures — and a prayer must be bodied together for each after these. The places are these: according to power, words of doxology must be said at the prayer's beginning and preface — with God glorified through Christ, hymned together in the Holy Spirit; and after this each must rank common thanksgivings — bringing, upon the thanksgiving, benefits toward many, and what he individually obtained from God; and after thanksgiving, I take one must become embittered over one's own sins, accusing them through confession and asking healing for them and forgiveness from God; and to this, I take it, must be joined the request for great and heavenly things — one's own and general, and for kin and dearest. And upon all, the prayer must rest in God's doxology through Christ in the Holy Spirit.

These places, as we foretold, are found dispersed in the Scriptures: the doxology-place, in the hundred-and-third Psalm, in these words — 'O Lord my God, thou art magnified exceedingly; confession and majesty thou didst put on, who wrappest light as a garment, who stretchest heaven as a hide, who roofest his upper chambers in waters, who makest clouds his footing, who walkest on wings of winds, who makest his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire, who foundest earth upon its safety — it shall not bow unto the age of age. Abyss as a garment is his cloak; upon the mountains shall waters stand. From thy rebuke they shall flee; from the voice of thy thunder they shall cower.' And most of this psalm contains the Father's doxology. One who gathers more for himself can see where the doxology-place is dispersed in many places.

Of thanksgiving, let this be poured forth as example, lying in Second Kingdoms — spoken by David after Nathan's promises to him, astounded at God's gifts and thanking for them in these words: 'Who am I, my Lord, Lord, and what is my house, that thou lovedst me unto these things? And I was made very little before thee, my Lord — and thou spakest for thy servant's house unto far off. And this is man's law, my Lord, Lord. And what shall David add more to speak to thee? And now thou knowest thy servant, Lord. For thy servant thou didst it, and according to thy heart thou didst all this thy greatness, to make known to thy servant, for magnifying thee, my Lord, Lord.'

Of confessions, for example: 'Deliver me from all my lawlessnesses'; and elsewhere, 'My stripes stank and rotted from the face of my folly. I was wretched and wholly bowed, all the day scowling I went.'

Of requests, in the twenty-seventh Psalm: 'Draw me not with sinners, and with workers of iniquity destroy me not with them' — and whatever is like these.

It is reasonable, beginning from doxology, ending in doxology to rest the prayer — hymning and glorifying the Father of all 'through Jesus Christ' in the Holy Spirit, 'to whom be glory unto the ages.'
