Thirty pieces; potter’s field
The prophet Jeremiah says: ‘And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whom the children of Israel valued, and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.’ (Zech 11:12-13; Mt 27:9-10)
For Judas, one of Christ’s disciples, presented himself before the Jews and swore an agreement with them; knowing they wanted to kill him, and resentful at having been rebuked by him, he received the thirty staters of the province and handed Christ over to them. (Mt 26:14-16)
But repenting of what he had done, he came back and threw the money at the feet of the Jewish leaders and hanged himself. (Mt 27:3-5) They, not judging it fitting to put that sum into the treasury because it was the price of blood, used it to buy a potter’s field in which to bury strangers. (Mt 27:6-8)
