Prologue to Ambrose: praying the twentieth tome from the Son’s fullness
As we dictate the twentieth tome on the Gospel according to John, most God-loving and most studious Ambrose in the Lord, we pray to receive full thoughts from the fullness of the Son of God, in whom it pleased all the fullness to dwell.
May God therefore send us the Word himself, making himself manifest, so that we may become beholders of his depth, the Father granting it.

Εἰκοστὸν ὑπαγορεύοντες εἰς τὸ κατὰ Ἰωάννην εὐαγγέλιον τόμον, φιλοθεώτατε καὶ φιλομαθέστατε ἐν κυρίῳ Ἀμβρόσιε, εὐχόμεθα ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ, εἰς ὃν εὐδόκησεν πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα κατοικῆσαι, λαβεῖν νοήματα πλήρη.
Θεὸς οὖν ἡμῖν πέμψαι αὐτὸν τὸν λόγον, ἑαυτὸν ἐμφανίζοντα, ἵνα τοῦ βάθους αὐτοῦ, δωρουμένου τοῦ πατρός, θεαταὶ γενώμεθα.
