Unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins
They said, “Who are you?” Jesus said, “What I have told you from the beginning. For unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.”
The “I am” is uttered in a God-befitting way, leading up to “I am the one who is.”

Εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ· Σὺ τίς εἶ; εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Τὴν ἀρχὴν ὅ τι καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖν. ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ πιστεύσητε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι, ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν.
Τὸ Ἐγώ εἰμι θεοπρεπῶς ἐκφωνεῖται, ἀνάγον εἰς τὸ ἐν τῇ Ἐξόδῳ· Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὤν.
