Ahaz will not ask; the Lord gives Immanuel
Ahaz’s refusal looked modest when he was told to ask a sign in the deep or in the height; he answered I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord. Yet the house of David is rebuked, and the Lord himself gives the sign: behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall call his name Immanuel. That sign is Jesus — he who descended is also he who ascended far above all the heavens.

Quantum ad dictum, verecunde fecit Achaz cum iuberetur petere signum in profundum aut in excelsum; ait: non petam neque tentabo Dominum. Tamen culpatur: audite, domus David. Ideo Dominus ipse dabit signum: ecce virgo in utero accipiet et pariet filium, et vocabis nomen eius Emmanuel. Signum propositum Dominus Iesus — in profundum quia qui descendit, in excelsum quia qui ascendit super omnes caelos.
