To Turbantius — fragments in Against Julian · §6-23-70

Julian objection and reported position

Against Julian 6.23.70

You understand the apostle’s words differently from the way that entire passage ought to be understood: ‘I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh,’ through ‘Miserable man that I am! Who will free me from the body of this death?’ (Romans 7:18–24)

Augustine also reports that Julian acknowledges the glorious struggles the saints undertake against the movements of fleshly desire.
