But let us examine the whole context of the passage. ‘If Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead,’ he says, ‘how do some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, Christ has not risen either. If Christ has not risen, our preaching is empty and your faith is empty. We are also found false witnesses about God, because we testified against God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise. For if the dead do not rise, Christ has not risen either. If Christ has not risen, your faith is vain, because you are still in your sins. Those who fell asleep in Christ have therefore perished too. If we hope in Christ only in this life, we are more pitiable than all people.

‘But now Christ has risen from the dead, the firstfruits of those who sleep. Since death came through a human being, resurrection of the dead also comes through a human being. For as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then those who belong to Christ, at his coming; then the end’ (1 Corinthians 15:12–24).
