Suppose, then, that the bishops whose words I am now clearing heard it doubted whether marital union was good. I would ask them whether they acknowledged that bodies were formed by God. Once that was granted, I would add whether they agreed that marriage was ordained by God. With that likewise confirmed, I would ask again whether offspring could exist without union. Once this was denied, what would follow? Clearly, if a body exists only through God, union only through a body, and offspring only through union, then both offspring and union belong to the same author as bodies.
