Do you therefore charge this nature in infants with being criminal, corrupt, and condemned because of its own will or because of the condition of birth? If through its own will—so that those infants are said to have sinned by their own efforts—a monstrous opinion arises, but inherited sin is denied: someone did not receive from another what he could commit himself. But if it receives so many evils not by its own action but by its condition, it is proved naturally unjust.
