‘Whether through sight, touch, hearing, smell, or taste. Remove, then, the root of this evil stock, and immediately you see yourself as spiritual. For Scripture says: “Desire is the root of all evils”’ (compare 1 Timothy 6:10).

You see in what spirit and for what doctrine Mani attacks fleshly desire, calling it the law of sin: if it were removed from bodies, his daughter, to whom he writes, would see that she had become spiritual. Let us hear which statements of the apostle he tries to use to establish this opinion: ‘“The flesh opposes the spirit,” because it is the daughter of desire; “and the spirit the flesh,” because it is the son of the soul’ (Galatians 5:17).
