See, then, in how many respects we acknowledge Christ’s medicine necessary to human nature. But I know you will cry out that I am quibbling with you: you did not mean medicine that helps bodies; by ‘medicine’ you meant Christ’s grace, which you claimed we deny. You could be answered that this is your fault, since you refused to identify with proper terms what you wanted understood. Yet now that we have understood, even belatedly, which medicine you meant—the medicine you falsely and vaguely alleged we deny—let us answer this second point too. As we declared in our first work, we acknowledge Christ’s grace, that is, baptism, from the time Christ established its rite, to be necessary for all ages alike. We pronounce an eternal anathema on anyone who denies that it benefits even infants.
