Yet possessing virtues is not a wretched business. Besides a kind of kingdom in a good conscience, it enjoys the promised height of eternal blessedness. The aids of God’s grace are also present, never abandoning the will on virtue’s side. Although grace has countless forms, they are always applied with such restraint that they never displace free will. They offer support for as long as the will chooses to lean on them, without overpowering a resistant mind. That is why, just as some people rise from vices to virtues, others also fall back from virtues to vices.
