To Florus 2.214

‘For if through one man’s offense death reigned through one, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one Jesus Christ’ (Romans 5:17). He consistently confirms what he began. He has set down two statements, intending what he added at the end to apply to both. He declares that death reigns through one who was a model of sin, and in whose likeness those who sin under the law transgress. He also declares that those who have obtained abundant grace reign in life through one—a grace which benefits those who imitate virtue. No question about the ‘one’ therefore remains. The added statement that those who receive abundant grace reign in life also resolves the first statement: no one is driven to death unless he has embraced the sinner’s example.
