Now consider how greatly your explanation conflicts with the rest of the passage and with these words in particular: the apostle declares that death reigned even over those ‘who did not sin in the likeness of Adam’s transgression, who is a figure of the one to come’ (Romans 5:14). If he were dealing with natural sin, about which, as you suppose, he had said ‘in whom all sinned’ (Romans 5:12), who would these people be whom he immediately declares not to be found liable—not merely for Adam’s transgression, but not even for the likeness of his fault?
