Did not Adimantus and Faustus, whom you call your teacher in the books of your Confessions, do the same thing, following the tradition of their heresy's founder (Augustine, Confessions 5.6–7, 13)? They seized and gnawed away at whatever statements were more obscure, whether from the Gospel or the apostles' letters, to defend an impious doctrine through the authority of those names. But why speak only of the Manichaeans? Every heresy fortifies its own inventions, through which it has strayed from piety and faith, with the language and statements of Scripture.
