I lay down and slept: death and rising in Psalm 3
David continues, speaking of the death and resurrection of Christ: ‘I lay down and slept; I awoke, because the Lord took hold of me.’ (Ps 3:5)
David was not saying this of himself, since once dead he did not rise; but it is the Spirit of Christ who, as through the mouth of other prophets, speaks of Christ himself through David’s. (1 Pet 1:11; Acts 2:29-31) He calls death a sleep, because he rose.
