Matthew 11:18–19
John was putting the passions of the flesh to death through an ascetic life; Jesus, as God, was putting them to death by an authoritative law, not helped by ascetic toils. John, “preaching a baptism of repentance,” was a type of gloom for those who ought to mourn for that; the Lord, “preaching the kingdom of heaven,” was showing brightness in himself, through which he now sketches for the faithful the life to come and toilless joy.
