On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 15 · §14

Fine-flour approach in Christ; holy-thing theft; vow delay; neighbor law opens

Cyril: …herself, of virtue always somehow the cheerful, through hope the unto God having much the sweet-smelling, as in fatness clearly the intelligible. So then a type of life, of the not having the cheerful and empty of sweet-fragrance, the fine-flour without frankincense and oil, but in Christ also she herself will be transferred toward the cheerful. And she receives also the sweet-smelling in faith, and is brought-forward to God through him, the one wiping those having been defiled, and washing-off intelligibly those having been caught in uncleanness. ‘For the priest will grasp,’ he says, ‘from the fine-flour, and will bring-up upon the altar of the whole-burnt-offerings to Lord.’ (Leviticus 5:12) For in Christ is our approach, and through him we approach the having-been-defiled. And we are justified through faith, and unto a smell of sweet-fragrance we dedicate ourselves to the Father, ourselves no longer, but Christ the in us, having the spiritual sweet-fragrance.

Palladius: True the word.

Cyril: And toward these at least, also if it should become for some to strike-against God, and to take-away something of the having-been-sanctified, or then to refuse the having-been-promised, and not even immediately to bring-forward, and the slack in these, to suffer a charge of forgetfulness, he thoroughly-cleanses again. For it has been written thus: ‘And Lord spoke toward Moses, saying: A soul which if forgetfulness should escape it, and should sin unwillingly from the holy things of Lord, also he will bring of his faulting to the Lord a ram unblemished from the sheep, of a price of silver shekels, by the shekel of the holy things, about which he faulted; and what he sinned from the holy things, he will repay it, and the fifth he will add upon it, and will give it to the priest, and the priest will propitiate about him in the ram of the faulting, and it will be forgiven for him.’ (Leviticus 5:15-16) For truly most-terrible, the to take-away something of the having-been-sanctified and being dedicated unto glory of God. And in equal manner will be slandered, and not in small causes, the not to repay the having-been-promised. ‘For child,’ he says, ‘if you should vow a vow to the Lord, do not delay to give it back; good the not to vow you, or the to vow, and not to give back.’ (Ecclesiastes 5:4-5) And somewhere also the all-divine David psalms: ‘Vow and give back to Lord your God.’ (Psalm 76:11) And the children of Eli also were being punished, stealing-under some of the holy things, and appropriating the things of God. (1 Samuel 2:12-17) So then what would become also of this somehow the forgiveness? Or how would they loose a foot from charges, and would someone be released? First on the one hand if he should make richer than the having-been-taken-away the counter-payment; For he will add the fifth, he says, then a ram unto sacrifice if he should bring-forward a bought one. The matter would be a type, of Christ, whom the having-stood-before of the Jews bought-out somehow, of thirty denarii, which they deposited for the betraying disciple. (Matthew 26:15) So then in Christ, also of the charges unto God, the forgiveness. And that also of the injustices unto humans he himself would release, uncomplicated to see, for those having read the neighbor and next law. And it holds thus: ‘And Lord spoke toward Moses, saying: A soul which if it should sin, and having overlooked should overlook the commands of Lord, and will lie the things toward the neighbor in a deposit, or about partnership, or about seizure, or’ (Leviticus 6:1-2)
