Heretic workshops like Ammon; Moab=Hellenes; no greeting
Cyril: …they load-on with the wickednesses from themselves. ‘For from us they went out, but they were not from us,’ (1 John 2:19) according to the having-been-written. ‘For if they were from us, they would have remained with us.’ (Matthew 12:30) To whom also the Savior himself, having the fairness plastered-on, yet not still also accustomed to do the things unto his glory, would address also very reasonably: ‘The one not being with me, is against me, and the one not gathering with me, scatters.’ (Deuteronomy 23:6) So then do the God-hated workshops of the heretics seem to you to resemble Ammonites, having been sickly extraordinarily as to the unsympathetic and un-God-loving?
Palladius: Very much so.
Cyril: And observe also Moabites, if it seems good, being most warlike openly for those willing to serve God the only both by nature and truly. For they were worshipers of idols, having taken heart exceptionally in divinations and sorceries, and having been fluttered not moderately about flights of birds, and grinding the teeth at the good-doings of Israel, they were hiring Balaam, and preparing him to curse, and by the unspeakable power of God, the mouth of the diviner was being reshaped toward blessings unwilling for them. Such would be the war of Hellenes against us, begrudging the glory of our Savior, and raising-up against us every strength of the devil, which the divine and from-above grace shakes-down, pouring the strengthless of the herd of the demons, and setting-up the manner of the plot toward the knowing to gladden.
Palladius: Very much so.
Cyril: And for Ammonites and indeed also for Moabites, untrodden are the holy things and very reasonably; for for whom the daring things are brother and the boldness same-formed, for these it would be fitting also to spring into the equal-balanced justices. And observe at least the firm of the law; for he removes the holy ones of them altogether, and not even so much as to say he wants to go unto common-speech, he enjoins saying: ‘You will not address peaceful things to them, and beneficial things for them you will not speak, all your days unto the age.’ (2 John 1:10) So then is this not vividly, what also a pair of holy ones has taught us out, both Paul and John? For the one was saying: ‘If someone comes toward you, and does not bear this teaching, do not say rejoice to this one,’ (Titus 3:10) and this, I think, is the, ‘You will not address peaceful things to them, and beneficial things for them.’ (Isaiah 50:11) And the other again, ‘A heretical human after one and a second admonition, refuse, knowing that such a one has been twisted-out.’ This is the, You will not speak beneficial things for them. For the law says one must yield to those very twisted-out, as to mad ones, saying: ‘Walk by the light of your fire, and by the flame which you kindled.’ But the Ammonite is shut out unto a third generation, and a Moabite even until a tenth, from at least the time, as I think, with God under-showing for us the greatness of the indignation upon both. For lesser, according to the likely, is the justice of heretics; one might say
