Catechumen with leavened; perfect with unleavened; oil of cheer; eat same day
Cyril: …and the still catechumen, and having set up-with the perfect the praise, departs from the still more mystical, and is barred from the sacrifice upon Christ. In this way well the law was pre-voicing the economy, and ordered the sacrifice of the praise to be made upon leavened breads, and in unleavened flatbreads. Each of the named, as I at least think, under-signaling a form of life; for the leavened bread will be a type of life and living not yet cleansed through the holy baptism, nor indeed altogether released from worldly uncleanness; and unleavened flatbread, of the already wiped in Christ through faith, of the perfect, I say, to whom also all-divine Paul was addressing, saying: ‘So that we may feast, not in old leaven, nor in leaven of badness and wickedness, but in unleavened of sincerity and truth.’ (1 Corinthians 5:7–8) And again: ‘Clean out then the old leaven, in order that you may be a new batch, just as you are unleavened.’ (Psalm 50:14–15)
Palladius: You spoke best.
Cyril: And fine flour besides not yet brought together unto oneness, just as also somehow in bread and in flatbread, but remaining as it were still in grains, under-hints the as one according to each and according to each one of those bringing near the praise; for we are acceptable to God, making the glorifyings, both each in part, and as one all according to multitude. And the oil is poured upon the sacrifice of the praise, under-signaling the cheerful of the matter, and that wholly and entirely the needing to be mercied by God will follow for those accustomed to bring it near. ‘For sacrifice,’ (Isaiah 49:9) he says, ‘to God a sacrifice of praise, and give back to the Highest your prayers; and call upon me in a day of your affliction, and I will rescue you, and you will glorify me.’ (James 5:13) And somewhere also the disciple of Christ writes: ‘Is someone among you depressed? Let him pray; is he cheerful? Let him psalm.’ (Exodus 15:1) So then in leavened breads, and in unleavened flatbreads, and still in millet-grains of fine flour the sacrifice of the praise needing to be worked out, he typed clearly; and with one from each being brought near, and as in one handful of the fine flour, and a sheep being slaughtered, and the inwards being sacrificed according to the law, the remaining edible for those ordered to sacred-work, the law showing the priesthood not without gain; he further orders saying: ‘In which day it is gifted, it will be eaten; they will not leave from it unto morning.’ (Psalm 96:1) Through which again it comes upon one to think somehow that; for with the time having driven past, and the present age having gone by just as a day, another manner of glorifying will be invented for us beside those we know. For just as having been freed from the dynasty upon Pharaoh rejoicing in law they were saying, ‘Let us sing to the Lord; for gloriously he has been glorified; horse and rider he threw into sea.’ (Psalm 47:5) And viewing beforehand in spirit the achievements of our Savior’s sojourn incomparably brighter and overlying, some of the saints have cried through: ‘Sing to the Lord a new song;’ and this was, ‘God went up in a shout,’ having stripped Hades, ‘and saying
