ANNOTATION II. On the Augsburg Confession associates' fundamental consensus and their praeter-fundamental dissent — and on that dissent's origin, progress, and outcome. To the Author's pp. 332–333.

§. I. The associates' fundamental consensus looks to the foundation of the Christian religion — Christian doctrine, theoretical and practical — of which some doctrines are fundamentals and others are built on them (fundamentata).

The former, taken in the scriptural sense, are the doctrines concerning Christ, our only Saviour, God and Man: the highest, first foundation for everything else (1 Cor. 3:11: "For other foundation can no man lay," &c.).

Here "Christ" means chiefly the doctrine about Christ, not only his person — clear from what precedes and what follows. Paul as wise architect is said to have laid the foundation (Christ); what he laid was not Christ himself but the gospel-doctrine about Christ, the base on which other Christian doctrines are built.

What follows confirms it: others are to build on that foundation gold, silver, wood, stubble — many things founded on the fundamental doctrine of Christ, some precious and useful, some cheaper and futile.

Eph. 2:20 says the same in one verse: Apostles and Prophets (i.e. their chief doctrines, not their persons) are called foundation, and Christ the cornerstone — that is, the doctrine of Christ is named the principal and most fundamental.

ANNOTATIO II. De Sociorum Confessionis Augustanae Consensu Fundamentali & Dissensu Praeter-fundamentali, hujusque Ortu, Progressu & Exitu, Ad Pag. Autoris 332. & 333. §. I. Consensus Fundamentalis Sociorum Confessionis Augustanae, respicit Fundamentum Christianae Religionis, seu Doctrinae Christianae, tam Theoreticae, quàm Practicae, quippe quarum Doctrinarum aliae Fundamentales, aliae Fundamentatae sunt. PRIORES, seu Fundamentales, accipiuntur VEL SENSU SCRIPTURARIO, & sunt Doctrinae de Christo, unico Salvatore nostro, Deo & Homine, reliquis Fundamentum praebiturae omnium summum, seu primum, 1. Cor. 3. v. 11. Aliud equidem Fundamentum nemo potest ponere &c.
