Daughters of Jerusalem as middle souls
The daughters of Jerusalem, to whom the Bride speaks, are middle souls: neither wholly carnal nor yet perfect. They are taught through the Bride’s confession not to be scandalized at the church’s blackness in persecutions, but to recognize inner beauty. Book II serves especially for their instruction.

Filiae Hierusalem, ad quas sponsa loquitur, animae sunt mediae: nec prorsus carnales nec iam perfectae. Docentur per confessionem sponsae ne scandalizentur nigredine ecclesiae in persecutionibus, sed formositatem interiorem agnoscant. Liber II earum eruditioni maxime deservit.
