Luke, I take it, through the 'bring us not into temptation,' taught in effect the 'deliver us from evil' too. And it is likely that to the disciple — as already profited — the Lord said the more compendious thing, while to the many, needing plainer teaching, the clearer. And God 'delivers us' 'from evil' — not when the enemy in no way approaches us, wrestling, with whatever methods of his, and serving his own will — but when we conquer, standing manfully toward what befalls. So too we took the 'Many are the afflictions of the righteous, and from them all he shall deliver them.' For God delivers from afflictions — not when afflictions no longer occur (if even Paul says 'afflicted in all things,' as though never 'not afflicted') — but when, 'afflicted,' we 'are not straitened' by God's help. Of being afflicted — after a certain Hebrew idiom — the involuntary circumstantial is signified; of being straitened, the voluntary: overcome by affliction, yielding to it. Whence Paul well says: 'Afflicted in all things, yet not straitened.' Like this, I think, is the saying in the Psalms: 'In affliction thou didst enlarge me.' For by the co-working and presence of the comforting Word of God who saves us, the cheerful and undaunted state of our mind in the season of circumstances, made by God, was called enlargement.
Likewise, then, must being delivered from the evil one be conceived ... God delivered Job — not by the devil's not receiving authority to encompass him with such temptations (for he did receive it), but by Job's sinning in nothing that befell, 'before the Lord,' but appearing righteous — to him who said, 'Doth Job worship the Lord for nothing? Hast thou not fenced the outside of him, and the inside of his house, and the outside of all his possessions round about? Thou hast blessed his works, and made his cattle many upon the earth. But stretch forth thy hand and touch all he has — surely he will bless thee to thy face' — confounded, as then also false-witnessing against Job. Job, suffering so much, did not, as the Opponent said, bless God 'to the face' — but, handed to the tempter, persists blessing the Lord, rebuking his wife who said, 'Say some word to the Lord, and die' — reproaching her with 'Thou hast spoken as one of the foolish women. Shall we receive good from the Lord's hand, and not bear evil?' And a second time the devil said to the Lord concerning Job: 'Skin for skin — all a man has he will give for his soul. But stretch forth thy hand and touch his bones and his flesh — surely he will bless thee to thy face.' Defeated by virtue's athlete, he is proved false. For though suffering grievous things, Job persisted, sinning in nothing 'with his lips' 'before God.' Two wrestlings Job wrestled and won; a third he does not wrestle — so great a contest. For the wrestling of the three had to be kept for the Savior — recorded in the three Gospels — with our Savior, conceived as man, conquering the enemy in the three.
That, then, understanding, we may ask God both not to enter 'into temptation' and to be delivered 'from the evil one' — having examined these things more exactly and searched them with ourselves — is worthy, through the sowing(?) of divine and saving thoughts, imprinted from contemplations of truth upon the practicing spiritual soul.
