A staff in the hand
As there those who eat the Passover in haste are commanded to have the shoes on their feet, likewise also in the gospel: those already able to sacrifice and eat the Passover, as has been shown, the apostle commands — as already having the loin girded in truth and putting on the breastplate of righteousness and having taken the helmet of salvation — already also to shoe themselves in readiness of the gospel, and already to have the staffs in their hands as already having shared in instruction. For the staff is a sign of instruction.

Ὡς ἐκεῖ οἱ τὸ πάσχα μετὰ σπουδῆς ἐσθίοντες κελεύονται τὰ ὑποδήματα ἔχειν ἐν τοῖς ποσὶν αὐτῶν, ὁμοίως καὶ ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοὺς ἤδη δυναμένους τὸ πάσχα θῦσαι καὶ φαγεῖν, ὡς δεδήλωται, κελεύει ὁ ἀπόστολος ὡς ἤδη περιεζωσμένους τὴν ὀσφὺν ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ περιτιθεμένους τὸν θώρακα τῆς δικαιοσύνης καὶ λαβόντας τὴν περικεφαλαίαν τοῦ σωτηρίου ἤδη καὶ ὑποδήσασθαι ἐν ἑτοιμασίᾳ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου καὶ ἤδη τὰς βακτηρίας ἔχειν ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν ὡς ἤδη παιδείας ||μετασχόντας, ἐπειδὴ ἡ βακτηρία παιδείας σύμβολον·
