The name of the Passover
Before we begin the word-by-word interpretation of the Passover, it is worth saying a little about the name itself, taken simply.
Most of the brothers — perhaps even all of them — take the name of the Passover from the passion of the Savior, as if the feast were called Passover from that. But among the Hebrews the feast before us is not properly called pascha. It is called phas. The three letters of phas, with the heavier breathing they use, make up the name of this feast, which, if it were interpreted, is crossing.

Πρὶν ἄρξασθαι τῆς κατὰ λέξιν ἐξηγήσεως τῆς τοῦ πάσχα, ἄξιον περὶ αὐτῆς ψιλῆς τῆς ὀνομασίας ὀλίγα εἰπεῖν τῆς τοῦ πάσχα.
