Young and virgin slain; exits of earth are life’s affairs

Upon the earth were thrown all who through age were unable toward the toils—a sight exceedingly pitiable—as also a slaughter of young men and of virgins; would that even of these there were slaughters before being led away unto a more bitter life. And exits of earth are the affairs of life, in which they slept, not having stayed awake nor prayed, but having also closed in folly the eyes of the soul. And who are these? If children, not very amazing. But now before these, those seeming to have advanced according to virtue, and everyone incorrupt in soul and powerful in war, has become subject to enemies. You as good put such a life of theirs to rest, and you cut down every constitution of theirs unto evil.
