Why we do not believe: unclean eyes of the soul
Someone might say: we do not believe because we do not yet see how what he says is truth; and we do not see because the soul’s truth-seeing eyes are not yet cleansed.
If we are not yet of God, the eyes of truth are covered over by vice.

Εἴποι ἄν τις· διὰ τοῦτο οὐ πιστεύομεν, ἐπεὶ οὐ θεωροῦμεν τίνα τρόπον ὃ λέγει ἐστὶν ἀλήθεια· οὐ θεωροῦμεν δὲ τῷ μηδέπω κεκαθάρθαι ἡμῶν τὰς διορατικὰς τῆς ἀληθείας ὄψεις.
Εἰ οὐδέπω ἐσμὲν ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ, αἱ τῆς ἀληθείας ὄψεις ἐπικεκάλυπται ὑπὸ τῆς κακίας.
