The spring within fulfills hunger and thirst for righteousness
The one who drinks the water Jesus will give will have within him that spring of water leaping up to eternal life when the promise spoken over those who hunger and thirst for righteousness is filled out. For the Word says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”
And perhaps, because one must hunger and thirst for righteousness before being filled, we have to let hunger and thirst be formed in us if we are to be satisfied — so that we may say, “As the deer longs for the springs of water, so my soul longs for you, O God.”

Τότε δὲ ὁ πιὼν ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος οὗ δώσει ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἕξει τὴν γενομένην ἐν αὐτῷ πηγὴν ὕδατος ἁλλομένου εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον, ὅτε πληροῦται τοῦ μακαριζομένου ἐπὶ τῷ πεινῆν καὶ διψῆν τὴν δικαιοσύνην ἡ ἐπαγγελία. φησὶ γὰρ ὁ λόγος· Μακάριοι οἱ πεινῶντες καὶ διψῶντες τὴν δικαιοσύνην, ὅτι αὐτοὶ χορτασθήσονται.
καὶ τάχα ἐπεὶ πεινῆσαι καὶ διψῆσαι δεήσει τὴν δικαιοσύνην πρὸ τοῦ χορτασθῆναι, ὑπὲρ τοῦ κορεσθῆναι ἐμποιητέον τὸ πεινῆν καὶ τὸ διψῆν, ἵνα εἴπωμεν· Ὃν τρόπον ἐπιποθεῖ ἡ ἔλαφος ἐπὶ τὰς πηγὰς τῶν ὑδάτων, οὕτως ἐπιποθεῖ ἡ ψυχή μου πρὸς σέ, ὁ θεός.
