Theological Theses · §171

Expressed immediately vs mediate by consequence — two natures

Beside the last distinction stands another close to it. One thing is to contain a teaching expressly and immediately; another is to contain it mediately, by consequence.

On our view Scripture does not hold every dogma of faith in that immediate, express form. Still nothing that necessarily belongs to faith and religion fails to follow from Scripture by a good, open consequence.

Scripture never says in so many words that Christ has two natures, or two wills in him. Both still belong to the truth of faith, because they follow openly from what Scripture teaches in many places — that Christ is true God and true man.

Latin

IX.
