In introducing his answer to the letter’s brief accusations, Augustine identifies the disputed claims as these: that Adam’s sin destroyed free will in human nature; that God is not the creator of newborn human beings, or that marriage was instituted by the devil rather than by God; and that what his side calls grace is really fate.
