Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching · §76

Strike the shepherd: disciples scattered

Here is how Zechariah speaks in turn: ‘Sword, awake against my shepherd and against the man who is my companion. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the fold will be scattered.’ (Zech 13:7; Mt 26:31)

This prophecy was fulfilled when Christ was seized by the Jews; all his disciples abandoned him for fear of suffering death with him, because they did not yet have a firm faith until they saw him risen from the dead. (Mt 26:56; Jn 20:19)
