Burning bush; Exodus types; rock and Joshua’s arms
He again spoke to Moses in the burning bush and said: ‘I have surely seen the affliction of my people in Egypt, and I have come down to deliver them.’ (Ex 3:7-8) It is he who went up and came down for the salvation of the afflicted, to deliver us from the Egyptians’ dominion — that is, from all idolatry and impiety — to save us from the Red Sea — that is, to keep us from the bloody quarrels of the nations and the bitter scandal of their blasphemies. (1 Cor 10:1-2)
All this was an anticipation of what we ourselves have lived; for the Word of God then showed beforehand in figure what was to happen; and now he has truly delivered us from the cruel slavery of the Gentiles and made a river of water gush abundantly in the wilderness from the rock — and the rock was he. (Ex 17:6; 1 Cor 10:4) And he made twelve springs flow — that is, the teaching of the twelve apostles.
Those who refuse to believe in him will waste away and perish in the wilderness. But those who have believed in him, children without malice, he has admitted to the fathers’ inheritance; and it is not Moses who enters that inheritance and divides it, but Jesus who delivers us from Amalek by the stretching out of his arms, leads us, and raises us to the kingdom of his Father. (Ex 17:11-13; Josh 1:1-2)
