Son with Abraham at Mamre; Sodom judged

Again Moses says that the Son of God came down to Abraham and conversed with him: ‘And God appeared to him by the oak of Mamre at midday. And lifting his eyes he looked, and behold, three men stood before him. And bowing to the earth he said: Lord, if indeed I have found favor in your eyes…’ (Gen 18:1-3) And in all that follows he speaks with the Lord, and the Lord speaks with him.

Now two of those three persons were angels; but the third was the Son of God, with whom Abraham spoke, interceding that the people of Sodom not be destroyed if at least ten righteous could be found there. (Gen 18:22-33) While they conversed, the two angels went down to Sodom and were received by Lot.

Then Scripture adds: ‘And the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven’ (Gen 19:24) — that is, the Son, the very one who spoke with Abraham; as Lord he received from the Lord, the Father who is master of all, the power to punish the people of Sodom.

Now Abraham was a prophet and saw the things that were to happen — that is, the Son of God who, in human form, would converse with human beings, eat with them, and afterward become their judge, he who had received from the Father, master of all, power to chastise the people of Sodom. (Jn 5:22; Jn 5:27)
