Cap. 6 Arg. 5 close: Boasting cut off; glory of human salvation wholly God's

Third, our view leaves human beings no handle for boasting, and assigns the glory of human salvation wholly to God, who makes one person differ from another—as the Apostle says: "Who makes you differ? What do you have that you did not receive?" (1 Corinthians 4:7). "From whom," Augustine asks, "except from him who distinguishes you from another, to whom he did not give what he gave you?" (De praedestinatione sanctorum 9). But if their view wins—that by Christ's death God has become equally kind to all people, and that from this equal bent toward all he administers grace so that whoever uses nature's light well, or does what lies in him, draws grace to himself, while whoever uses that light badly, or fails to do what lies in him, does not—then the person who ends up sharing in grace has from himself a fair ground of boasting: by his own choice he set himself apart from another whom no special gift of divine mercy had set apart.
