Cap. IX Arg. 6 Sol open: reprobation does not make God or defect of grace the true cause of human perdition — the sinner with his sins is the true and sole cause

We deny that the reprobation we teach makes God himself — or a defect of divine grace — the cause of human perdition, unless 'cause' is used improperly and abusively. The true cause of perdition or damnation is what justly deserves damnation, or the one who works what damnation is due. So the sinner himself with his sins is to himself the true and sole cause of his perdition. Being reprobated, or passed by from preparation of special grace and mercy, neither deserves nor works perdition. What we teach does not cast damnation's cause on a defect of divine grace; it casts the denial of efficacious special grace on the liberty of divine will. God's will is the determining cause that some are not drawn out of perdition by efficacious unfrustrable grace while others are; the reprobates' own malice is the operative meritorious cause why they perish and are damned.
