Descend from angels to men. In men the equity of this is far easier to see. Since the whole mass of humankind has flowed down into merited damnation by our first parent's disobedience, if God with no further regard to actual sins wills to pass by and reject however many in preparing and giving special grace, he passes by and rejects those in whom he finds nothing for which they should be elect to so excellent a benefit, and in whom he finds much for which they are most unworthy of it. Nothing else need be said but Augustine (On the Good of Perseverance 8): Let him who is freed love grace; let him who is not freed acknowledge the debt — and Paul (Rom. 9:20): O man, who are you to answer God? Shall the thing formed say...?

Latin

8. Et illud Apostoli, Rom. ix. 20. O homo, tu quis es qui respondeas Deo? Num dicet figmentum, etc.
