Cap. VIII: those denied such grace are passed by — demerit concomitant, not cause of praeterition

Those to whom God in his eternal decree denied such grace and the same ordination to glory, he did not elect but passed by — and, as theologians speak, reprobated. Add this: we do not deny that in all on whom divine reprobation falls there is found concomitant demerit adhering to the subject. What we deny is that that praeterition or non-election we call negative reprobation flowed from regard to that demerit. God sees original demerit in elect and reprobate alike — yet not by discrimination of cause, but by his good pleasure, he wills to elect Jacob, and wills not to elect but to reprobate Esau.
