Cap. VI Arg. 4: Augustine, Arminius, Vorstius — unequal conversion; absolute mercy

Augustine again: when God wills to save outright, no human will resists; when he wills to save only if men will believe, most wills resist — so he wills to save some by absolute good pleasure that goes before and causes their faith, not that presupposes it. That thought drove Arminius to admit God does not work everyone's conversion and salvation equally. But a prudent agent shapes his work from the end he intends. So there was a special will to save some before foresight of their faith — and from it sprang that special calling and working that begot faith in their hearts. Vorstius, weighing the same special vocation, grants that toward some God exercises an extraordinary mercy free of every promise and absolute — and in that sense, He will have mercy on whom he will (Piscator, Reply to the Apology, p. 17).

Latin

Apolog. pag. 17.
