Cap. III Sol. Rat. 13 close: no despair for the willing — removes boasting, not study of holiness

Nor do we cast despair on any mortal willing to believe and live piously: we give such people most sure confidence they belong among the elect and those to be saved. We preach gratuitous election while teaching that no one gets fruit or comfort from it without faith and holiness — and that anyone living faithfully and holily can and ought to count himself among the elect. So the doctrine takes away every occasion of boasting and pride in one's works, but not the study of doing well; it rather kindles that study, teaching that no one has any certainty of election outside pursuit of holiness, or can ever reach election's end — eternal life — except by the way of holiness.
