7. Stapleton (Moral Promptuary, Second Sunday after Easter, p. 254): Dying, Christ died effectually for friends alone — for friends-to-be after each one's conversion, not for those who were already friends. This Romanist does not shrink from granting Christ's dying a singular intention toward the elect. They are the future friends after conversion for whose effectual redemption he laid down his life while, with the rest, they were still ungodly, enemies, sinners, dead in sins. He is said to have died for all humans as to sufficiency; for his sheep — his elect — as to this efficacy, that is, with a singular intention, from his death's merit, to give them the effectual grace by which they believe and are saved. 8. Estius on Titus 2:14, Who gave himself for us: that is, who in assumed flesh delivered himself up, whether for all humans or specially for the elect, in whose person Paul often speaks. Christ's death-price suffices to redeem and save all, yet is applied unto salvation to the elect alone. Estius thus hints two things: Christ's offering had a general respect to all and a special to the elect; and that special respect must be defined as joined to an intention of applying it with certainty. He did not say the elect alone apply Christ's death to themselves by free choice's powers, but that it is applied unto salvation to them alone — by electing God, intending this good for his elect from Christ's death by special favor.

Latin

7. Stapletonus, Promptuar. Moral. Dominic. 2. post Pasch. pag. 254.
