Cyril of Alexandria: Fragments on Matthew · §80

Matthew 8:18

Christ withdrew from the crowds so that no one would think him applause-loving, glad of praise from the many; so that the Pharisees would not be angered at him (for it distressed them greatly that many followed him); and so that he might shine his own saving light on the nearby cities.
