Cyril of Alexandria: Fragments on Matthew · §178

Matthew 17:11–12

Christ shows that the Jews are greatly ignorant of the scriptures, from which they did not recognize John — that is, the first Elijah, “who prepared the way of the Lord.” Not knowing him and killing the forerunner of Christ, they also failed to recognize the Lord himself and killed him.
