Pray Lord Sabaoth yourself; James 5; no false oaths
mies. And you, if you ache in some of the body’s portions, and have truly believed that the Lord Sabaoth, and such callings which the divine Scripture distributes to the God according to nature, will become loosening for you of the evil, yourself praying on behalf of yourself, cry out the words; for you will do better than those, laying up the glory for God, and not for the unclean spirits. And I will also remember the God-breathed Scripture saying: ‘Is someone weak among you? Let him call the elders of the Church, and let them pray upon him, having anointed him with oil, in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of the faith will save the one laboring, and the Lord will raise him, and if he has done sins, it will be forgiven him.’
Palladius: Let bird-watching then, and indeed also charm, be ranged together, if it seems good, with those having been accused from law, and with those in most shameful and most abominable glory beside God.
Cyril: And very much, and I would add that also in other manners we will insult God, and someone would owe a writing and words of the impiety unto him, having chosen to false-swear, and to say some reverse-speaking and discordant thing against at least the highest and uppermost glory. For the one is punished with the altogether anger, and with unmanageable penalty, the sickle completing, according as it has been written, the false-swearer’s hearth, and shaking it down unto the complete: ‘For it will enter,’ it says, ‘into the house of the thief, and into the house of the one swearing by my name upon a lie, and will dissolve in the middle of his house, and will complete him, and his woods, and his stones.’ Yet the other—the needing to have died, and to have the justice beyond all the evils. Therefore one must swear not upon a lie; or rather not swear at all. For this the Savior taught us, saying: ‘Let your Yes be yes, and your No, no; and the excess of these is from the devil.’ For there will not be need of an oath at all for those in a reputation of solemnity, and having made virtue as it were house-mate; for among the lovers of piety the life of such ones has been very much honored, and to hate being disbelieved; and if somehow he should utter something, he is at once crowned with the hearers’ faith. Therefore let our life be well-glorious, and the need of swearing through will altogether somehow be idle, as I think. And if somehow it should come to be, and of some sometimes thinking little of the honor unto holy ones, let God be oath-partner, let another’s name of some not be carried beside. For already some going without looking-around unto loose fadings pretend to be indifferent, saying by heaven, or justice, by Adrasteia, by the light, by the lamp. And collecting some other things according to what seems to them, they somehow perhaps also think to be pious, thrusting aside the divine name, yet gilding with the glory fitting for God the things having been called unto genesis by his nods. Such a wandering we will find Israel having been sick with according to seasons. For confessedly to God they built up the one in Jerusalem
