On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 15 · §32

Eighth-day Spirit circumcision; formed to Christ; Book 15 closes

Cyril: …the death from Adam and until Moses, and has mastered of those upon the earth the many-formed sin. (Romans 5:14) And since according to the eighth, that is, after the of the law season and that ancient Sabbathism, with an unhandmade circumcision we have been circumcised through Spirit, (Colossians 2:11) and we have been formed also unto Christ, of his divine nature having become sharers; (2 Peter 1:4) we have beaten-back then the charges, and has been made-to-disappear also the filth, and every of us has gone a defilement; for we are born not unto corruption still, through the in Adam transgression, but unto life and incorruption, through the in Christ justification, of the over us having endured a slaughter, as of a lamb unblemished and true, as of a turtle-dove divine and intelligible; for we have been saved not otherwise.

Palladius: Altogether on the one hand then; for clear exceedingly the riddle.

ὁ θάνατος ἀπὸ Ἀδὰμ καὶ μέχρι Μωσέως, κατεκράτησε δὲ τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἡ πολύμορφος ἁμαρτία. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ κατὰ τὴν ὀγδόην, τουτέστι, μετὰ τὸν τοῦ νόμου καιρὸν καὶ τὸν ἀρχαῖον ἐκεῖνον Σαββατισμὸν, ἀχειροποιήτῳ περιτομῇ περιτετμήμεθα διὰ Πνεύματος, μεμορφώμεθα δὲ καὶ εἰς Χριστὸν, τῆς θείας αὐτοῦ φύσεως γενόμενοι κοινωνοί· διεκρουσάμεθα δὴ τὰ ἐγκλήματα, κατηφάνισται δὲ καὶ ὁ ῥύπος, καὶ ἅπας ἡμῶν οἴχεται μολυσμός· τικτόμεθα γὰρ οὐκ εἰς φθορὰν ἔτι, διὰ τὴν ἐν Ἀδὰμ παράβασιν, ἀλλ' εἰς ζωήν τε καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν, διὰ τὴν ἐν Χριστῷ δικαίωσιν, τὴν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ὑπομείναντος σφαγὴν, ὡς ἀμνοῦ ἀμώμου καὶ ἀληθινοῦ, ὡς τρυγόνος θείας καὶ νοητῆς· σεσώσμεθα γὰρ οὐχ ἑτέρως. Ἦ γὰρ οὐχ ὧδε ἔχει;

{ΠΑΛΛ.} Παντάπασι μὲν οὖν· σαφὲς γὰρ λίαν τὸ αἴνιγμα.
