Crushed vs cut manhood type; Ammon=heretics; Moab=idolaters
Cyril: …meeting them for you with breads and water in the way, with you going out from Egypt, and that they hired against you Balaam son of Beor from Mesopotamia to curse you. And Lord your God did not wish to hearken to Balaam, and Lord your God turned the curses into a blessing, because Lord your God loved you. You will not address peaceful things to them, and beneficial things for them, all your days unto the age.’
Palladius: And who would be understood crushed and cut-off, Ammonite and Moabite, I would wish to learn thoroughly.
Cyril: Hear then; the of the making of eunuchs is not one manner, not one, O Palladius, but some double is said to be, and has been found-out. For some are cutters and having been torn-apart as to the male things; and others still bear crushed and altogether useless things, and some sometimes cut-off rawly and unholily the child-making part of the body, and are inactive toward the of a man, and yet finishing among men by nature and age; and a symbol of manliness, the male things. So then one must suspect the crushed, the as it were somehow not having been pulled-out altogether as to soul and mind, but rather somehow saving in himself the shattered manliness upon goods, and indeed the cut-off, the one having thrown them away wholly, and having been deprived of the things most fitting for men. And in equal as it were a charge, with the not wishing to man-up at all, the loving not to man-up healthily.
Palladius: Of what sort then do you say?
Cyril: Some have fallen-back into fleshly desires, having released as it were whole reins to the passion, throwing-beside the mind rotten and unmanly to the pleasures unto wantonness. And others again wonder at continence, and sometimes touch the bright attempts unto this, but fear-out the standing-against, and not bearing the assault of the pleasure, they nod-down toward the strengthless. So then, will you not reasonably call the one having altogether given-up the attempts unto manliness cut-off? And the one having in mind the wishing to man-up, yet not still also being strong to set upright the virtue, will you think crushed, reshaping urbanely also the passions of the body unto a quality of manners, and receiving the in sense as an image of the intelligible and more unapparent?
Palladius: Very much so.
Cyril: And with these was being shut-out-together both Ammonite and Moabite, as unholy and most abominable, and springing-upon the holy ones as lions, and pouring upon those accustomed to be well-reputed the arrows from envy and malice. And they would be a type, Ammonites at least, of the unpitiful heretics. And Moabites again, of those still in the idolatrous wanderings, and having been underlaid with the wickednesses of the demons; for both God-hated, and as it were sick with a brother boldness against the holy ones (Deuteronomy 23:4–6).

{ΠΑΛΛ.} Οἷον δὴ τί φής;
{ΚΥΡ.} Ἀναπεπτώκασί τινες εἰς ἐπιθυμίας σαρκικὰς, ὅλας ὥσπερ ἡνίας ἀνέντες τῷ πάθει, σαθρόν τε καὶ ἄνανδρον ταῖς εἰς ἀσέλγειαν ἡδοναῖς παραῤῥιπτοῦντες τὸν νοῦν. Ἕτεροι δὲ αὖ θαυμάζουσι τὴν ἐγκράτειαν, καὶ ἅπτονται μὲν ἔσθ' ὅτε τῶν εἰς τοῦτο λαμπρῶν ἐπιχειρημάτων, ἐκδεδίασι δὲ τὴν ἀντίστασιν, καὶ τὴν τῆς ἡδονῆς προσβολὴν οὐ φέροντες, κατανύουσι πρὸς τὸ ἄναλκι. Ἆρ' οὖν, οὐχὶ τὸν μὲν εἰσάπαν ἀπειρηκότα τοῖς εἰς ἀνδρίαν ἐπιχειρήμασιν προσερεῖς εἰκότως ἀποκεκομμένον; Τὸν δὲ εἰς νοῦν μὲν ἔχοντα τὸ θέλειν ἀνδρίζεσθαι, μὴ μὴν ἔτι καὶ κατορθοῦν ἰσχύοντα τὴν ἀρετὴν, οἰήσῃ θλαδίαν, εἰς τρόπων ποιότητα μεταχαράττων ἀστείως καὶ τὰ τοῦ σώματος πάθη, καὶ εἰκόνα τῶν νοητῶν καὶ ἀφανεστέρων, τὰ ἐν αἰσθήσει δεχόμενος;
