Single-testicled = half-man / soft; may eat holy yet barred from altar; shared weakness warned
Cyril: …it of the sobriety in us, and destroying little by little. And single-testicled besides, he says, just as I at least think, the half-man, and as it were cut-off the perfectly manly. ‘For neither fornicators,’ (Romans 6:4) he says, ‘nor soft ones will inherit the kingdom of God.’ (1 Corinthians 6:9–10) And he names such ones womanish, because having obtained a man’s nature they lie about the manly, soft in both mind and body, and willingly bent toward the unmanly and woman-fitting. And it is likely again that the single-testicled also under-shows something else. For it is custom to name a man the well-strong and compacted, and not insufficiently having unto being able to set upright whatever he might somehow choose. And reasonably half a man would be thought the not wholly well-strong, nor altogether keen unto the things fitting him; for it is not fitting for the one lying upon God to bring forward courage cut-apart for him and the well-strong damaged, and as to be weak from part; but to play-the-man and be strong, according to what has been written, having unreproachable and unmocked eagerness. So then unholy admittedly is the one under a writing of blemish. Yet he is not barred from the needing to share the holy food. ‘For he will eat from the holy things,’ (1 Corinthians 16:13) he says, ‘yet toward the veil he will not come forward, and toward the altar he will not draw near.’ (Leviticus 21:22–23) For those still liable to the inward hidden weaknesses unto mind would share the blessing of Christ, and not as in the rank of the saints unto increase of sanctification, and unto firmness of mind, and the remaining firmly set upon all the best things, but as in the manner fitting those sick unto putting away of the evil, and unto cessation of sin, and unto deadening of pleasures, and unto taking-up of spiritual good-condition. For since Christ is a new creation, according to the Scriptures, in this way we also receive him in ourselves through his holy flesh and blood, in order that being re-elemented unto newness of life through him and in him, we may put off the old human, the one being corrupted according to the desires of deceit, according to what has been written.
Palladius: You spoke rightly.
Cyril: So then he denies the practice of the sacred works to those somehow having the intelligible outrage melted-in and irremovable sick; for least holy is what is always sick the grown-on of the passions; but if also for someone of those having blamelessly at least in themselves, and unreproachably unto liturgy, the being sick of these common and not fading passions happens, he orders that he must not be left unreproved, saying: ‘Speak toward Aaron and toward his sons, and let them take heed from the holy things of the sons of Israel, and they will not profane my holy name, as many as they themselves sanctify for me; I am Lord. Speak to them: Into your generations every human who should come forward from all the seed’ (2 Corinthians 5:17) (Ephesians 4:22) (Leviticus 22:2–3)
