On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 12 · §25

Imitate fathers’ whole-burnt; sin offering = Emmanuel; church mystery leftovers

Cyril: …ones’ well-reputations, and be shown imitators of the fathers’ good-fame, going according to track of their worship, and bringing near the fragrance most dear to God, not sharedly, but wholly. For this, I think, is the, ‘Every sacrifice of a priest will be whole-burnt.’ (Leviticus 6:24–29)

Palladius: So then we will bring ourselves near, and will be dedicated unto a smell of fragrance to God, tracking the life of the saints, and following their sacred-works, clearly the spiritual.

Cyril: Very much so, O Palladius. Yet that the rubbing-off pollution, and running through sin, would not otherwise become and exist in some, except through Christ alone, in whom and through whom is every cleansing, who endured the saving slaughter over us, one would learn, and not unto long, through the neighboring and yoked ordinance; for it holds thus: ‘And the Lord spoke toward Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying: This is the law of the sin; in a place where they will slaughter the whole-burnt, they will slaughter the things concerning the sin before Lord; Holy of holies it is. The priest bringing it up will eat it; in a holy place it will be eaten, in the court of the tent of the witness. Everyone touching its meats will be sanctified; and for whom if there should be sprinkled from its blood upon the garment, whoever should be sprinkled upon it, will be washed in a holy place; and an earthen vessel in which if it should be boiled will be crushed; and if in a bronze vessel it should be boiled, he will rub it out, and rinse with water. Every male among the priests will eat them; Holy of holies it is to Lord.’ (John 1:29) So then the victim concerning the sin would be nothing other beside Emmanuel, who is the true lamb the one taking up the sins of the world. And he is slaughtered in the place of the whole-burnt; for Christ is not partially and according to us holy (for he did not do sin), but wholly fragrant and sacred, and supplier of sanctification to all the others. For even if he was reckoned among the lawless and became numbered with the condemned economically; yet the Father knows the death of the Son being holy and sacred. In this way he says: ‘In a place where they will slaughter the whole-burnt, they will slaughter also the concerning sin; Holy of holies it is.’ (Isaiah 53:12) For just as God of gods is the Son, thus also Holy of holies, himself sanctifying the whole creation by his own spirit, inasmuch as he has been born from Father, and is God truly. And the priest bringing it near will eat the sacrifice, he says. For each, I think, of those led unto the sacred liturgy will harvest the fruits of his own labors, and will reap the counter-gift of his own liturgy. And the leftover of the sacrifice is eaten in holy places, and in the court of the holy tent. For the mystical things are brought near in churches, and the select race of the holy table of Christ is deemed worthy in them. And wherever a lawful priest priests, a place will be holy. And the sacrifice sanctifies the one touching, and the sprinkling of the blood. We approach (2 Corinthians 5:21) (Hebrews 13:10)
