Goat = confession; altar inauguration; voice above mercy-seat = Father in Son
Cyril: …toward all, teaching in meekness those opposing.’ And the needing to follow the things already said beforehand also the bringing-forward of the goat, would show not another, I think, something, except what I said just now, that all need, even if some should be good in habit, the cleansing through repentance and forgetfulness of trespasses. And knowing this the divine David said: ‘If you should watch lawlessnesses, Lord, Lord, who will stand?’ (Psalm 130:3) So then a he-goat is the victim for release, according to the ancient law. And repentance now and asking of forgetfulness is the victim according to us, who approach God in spirit and truth. ‘For say,’ he says, ‘you your sins first, that you may be justified.’ (Isaiah 43:26) And David also sings somewhere: ‘I said, I will confess against me my sin to the Lord, and you have released the impiety of my heart.’ (Psalm 32:5) So then is the word concerning the gift-bearing of the rulers already clear for you?
Palladius: Wholly so.
Cyril: And I think one must also say that, for with the sacrifice from each and as for all already having been brought forward, a beginning of the divine words came to be in the holy tent toward the hierophant Moses. And it has been written thus again in the Numbers: ‘This is the inauguration of the altar, after filling his hands, and after anointing him. When Moses was entering into the tent of the testimony, to speak to him, and he heard the voice of Lord God speaking toward him from above the mercy-seat, which is upon the ark of the testimony, between the two Cherubim, and he was speaking toward him.’ (Numbers 7:89) For when the holy tent has been perfected as it were, and the true sanctuary has been shown to world, which is the Church, then indeed then a voice has come to be toward us of God and Father. ‘For he has spoken to us in Son,’ (Romans 3:25) whom also we say to be a mercy-seat for our sins, according to the Scriptures. And from above the Cherubim the voice; for highest of creation and beyond is God, having the according to every thing that has come to be superiority essential and inherent; and ferrying through unto us the voices from above and from Father, the Son was saying, the true mercy-seat, ‘The sayings which I speak are not mine, but of the one who sent me.’ (Hebrews 1:2) So then from above the mercy-seat the voice has come to be. And you would marvel not moderately examining the approach of the tribe-rulers. For with a day having been allotted to each and specifically, according to which one must fulfill the things arranged and bring forward the gift, they were approaching in order according at least to what seemed good to the lawgiver; yet not according to the order of birth, or according to age, nor mixed and simply poured, but rather having been composed as it were unto a mystical arrangement.
Palladius: And indeed what ever it is which you say, I am not able to think. Speak then clearly for me.
Cyril: Do you wish we say in order and successively those from (John 14:24)
