On Adoration and Worship in Spirit and Truth, Book 10 · §21

Blood = soul; Emmanuel for Jew and Gentile; anoint tent vessels = Christ anointed

Cyril: …of bloods in the first tent; and of soul unto a type is the blood. And Emmanuel has set the soul, not for the Church from nations alone, but also for those in law—that is, Israel; for we have all been ransomed together by the blood of Christ, Greeks and Jews, and Paul will witness saying: ‘Or is God of Jews only? And not also of nations? Yes, also of nations; since God is one, who will justify circumcision from faith, and uncircumcision through faith.’ (Romans 3:29–30) And with the inwards of the calf being taken away from them and being brought up unto the altar, the remaining body is burned down outside the camp. For he himself is the sacred victim, fragrant in virtues, of which the inwards would be types, and the virtues somehow hidden in us, and lying inward unto mind; he himself also the one suffering outside the gate, and by the death of his own flesh cleansing those who have been polluted; ‘For ash of a heifer sprinkling those who have been shared, sanctifies,’ (Hebrews 9:13) he says, ‘unto the cleanness of the flesh.’ (Hebrews 2:11) So then Emmanuel, being one and the same, also is fragrant in the holy tents—I mean the Churches; and he has also suffered outside the gate; where also we must go out bearing his reproach, all-divine Paul said. And the calf is also brought forward for the ignorances of the people, equally and indistinguishably; and the word of the sacrifice was the same in all. For in equal manner Emmanuel has brought himself forward for both small and great, people and priests. Or is what I say not true?

Palladius: How not?

Cyril: Do you wish then that as drawing the word back again, we turn toward the narrations upon the tent?

Palladius: And very much.

Cyril: So then with all the works having been finished, and with the sacred vessels having been set together very well in the place most fitting for each, God was typing that both they and the tent must be sanctified, saying thus to all-divine Moses: ‘And you will take the oil of the anointing, and you will anoint the tent, and all the things in it, and you will sanctify it, and all its vessels, and they will be holy. And you will anoint the altar of the fruit-offerings, and all the vessels in it, and you will sanctify the altar, and the altar will be Holy of holies.’ (Hebrews 13:11–13) So then you see both the ark, and indeed the table, and the lampstand upon it, and still the golden censer, being anointed with the holy oil; and yet a long word has already clarified for us Emmanuel being typed in all.

Palladius: True.

Cyril: Understand then the through David’s voice, as being hymned toward him: ‘You have loved righteousness, and hated lawlessness. On account of this God, your God, has anointed you with oil of gladness beside your sharers.’ (Exodus 30:26–29) And Paul also writes, ‘For both the one sanctifying and those being sanctified are all from one.’ (Psalm 45:7) And one must know that according to the word holding blamelessly, he himself existing the (Hebrews 13:12)
