For being God and at the same time a perfect human being, the same one confirmed his two substances to us: his deity through the signs in the three years after baptism, and his humanity in the thirty years before baptism — in which, because of the incompleteness according to the flesh, he hid the signs of his deity, though he is true God existing before the ages.
So when the Lord redeems us by his own blood, and gives his soul for our soul and his flesh for our flesh, and pours out the Spirit of the Father for the union and communion of God and humankind — bringing God down to human beings through the Spirit, and lifting humankind to God again through his incarnation — and in his coming truly and surely gives us incorruption through communion with God, all the heretics’ teachings perish.
Summing up all things, then, he also summed up the war against our enemy, crushing the one who at the beginning in Adam had led us captive, and treading his head — as you have in Genesis God saying to the serpent: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he will watch your head, and you will watch his heel.”
For from him who was to be born of a virgin woman according to Adam’s likeness, it was proclaimed that he watches the serpent’s head — that is, the seed of which the Apostle speaks.
